I am currently in a masters program in quantitative methods in the social science at Columbia University in the City of New York. Among other things, I have dabbled or will dabble in the following:

- Applied regression analysis: given data, how can we model the relationship between a bunch of variables?
- Spatiotemporal analysis and geographic information systems (GIS): given data that vary across space and time, how can we model the relationship between a bunch of variables, and how can we visualize our data on maps?
- Multilevel modeling: given data clustered into groups, how can we model the relationship between a bunch of variables?
- Bayesian statistics: given data, how can we continuously update our model of the relationship between a bunch of variables by incorporating prior beliefs and knowledge?
- Data mining & machine learning: given data, sometimes a lot of it, how can we select relevant variables and model the relationship between a bunch of them in order to maximize our ability to efficiently and accurately predict new data?
- Unsupervised learning: given data, sometimes a lot of it, how can we tell similar groups of data apart from each other?
- Design and analysis of sample surveys: how can we obtain data by asking people stuff, and given that, how can we model the relationship between a bunch of variables and adjust our model so that the people we asked are representative of our population of interest?
- Statistical programming: given data, how can we model it without taking 500 years?
- Social science: what can all this modeling actually tell us, and what can’t it tell us?

So there will be many entries in this blog dealing with some or all of the above as applied to Philippine society.

Hi,

Hope this finds you well

My name is Jonty Cruz. I’m the editor of Young Star, the weekly youth lifestyle section of The Philippine Star and would like to know if you’d be willing to write for our elections recap issue? Basically would love to read a summary of the survey process in this year’s election, detailing the good the bad, and if it really helped as a whole.

Thanks and hope to hear from you soon!

Best,

Jonty

Hi Jonty! I have done some commentary on election surveys but I don’t have a whole lot of insight on actual survey processes. I don’t think I’m currently capable of writing a piece I could be proud of on the topic you’re requesting. A proper piece on said topic would involve interviews and investigative research with survey and media firms, survey staff, campaign organizers, statisticians, etc. There’s not much I can say from my point of view, so I’ll have to decline. Thanks for asking!
